Frequently Asked Questions — Wilmington, CA
How do you handle mobilization, and does Wilmington or CA affect the service area?
Most commercial diving contractors are mobile, bringing a full crew and dive spread to your site. Mobilization is a separate line item from the daily rate and depends on travel distance, equipment needed, and whether a support vessel is required. When you compare bids, the mobilization charge is often the largest variable, so make sure each quote is apples-to-apples.
What is the typical lead time for scheduling a dive, and who gets permits?
Scheduling depends on crew availability, water conditions, and project complexity; we recommend starting the process as early as possible. For work in navigable waterways, the commercial diving contractor typically obtains USACE and state permits. For work entirely on private property, the engineer or owner may need to secure local permits, so confirm during pre-bid.
How is commercial diving priced?
Pricing is based on a crew/spread day rate plus a separate mobilization charge. Inspection work is often quoted per structure or per concrete substructure unit, while marine construction is typically unit-priced—per linear foot, per pile, or per weld. Because mobilization varies so much, it often explains a large gap between bids.
What will we receive as the final report?
You'll get a written condition assessment with photos or video logs to document the findings. For bridge inspections, the report must comply with 23 CFR 650.311 and NBIS, and be signed off by an FHWA-NHI qualified team leader. Underwater repairs will have a separate post-repair report from the ADCI dive supervisor.
