Frequently Asked Questions — North Weymouth, MA
How far do you travel from North Weymouth, MA, and why is mobilisation a separate charge?
We routinely cover the entire MA region, and can travel farther for large projects. Mobilisation covers the dive team's travel, equipment staging, and per-diem, so it is quoted as a fixed line item separate from the daily spread rate. A remote site can make mobilisation a significant part of the total, and it is often the reason two bids look very different. We can help you compare quotes by asking each surveyor for a line-item breakdown.
How is a commercial diving survey priced?
The daily crew/spread rate is the base, plus a separate mobilisation charge. For bridge or dock inspections, we often quote per structure or per substructure unit, and for marine construction work it is commonly unit-priced per linear foot or per pile. Because mobilisation is separate, it can be the largest driver of cost differences between bids. We provide a clear line-item proposal so you know exactly what you are paying for.
What will I receive in the survey report, and who is qualified to sign it?
You get a written condition or damage report with photographs, measurements, and a dive log. For in-water hull exams we follow the documentation requirements of 46 CFR 71.50-3, and if underwater welding was performed, AWS D3.6M governs the procedure. The report is prepared by a dive supervisor meeting ADCI consensus standards, and it includes a plain-English summary for insurers and regulators. Digital delivery makes it easy to share and archive.
Should I haul the boat out for the survey, or can it be done in-water?
In-water surveys (UWILD) avoid haul-out costs and keep the vessel working, but visibility and access to the hull are limited. Haul-out gives the surveyor full access for thickness measurements and internal inspection of sea chests and through-hulls, which is often essential for a damage survey. If the damage is well-defined and accessible below the waterline, in-water may be enough; if the extent is unknown or you need internal structure evaluation, dry-docking is the safer choice. We can recommend the method after a quick look at your situation.
