Frequently Asked Questions — Bridgeport, CT
We're a few hundred miles from your nearest office. Is that too far for a marine construction or commercial diving bid?
Most commercial diving and marine construction firms in CT quote work based on travel distance. The crew/spread day rate covers the in-water work; mobilisation covers getting the dive team, vessels, and equipment to your site and back. A large mobilisation line is normal and is the most common reason bids from different contractors vary by more than the actual construction scope. You should ask for mobilisation as a separate line item and check whether it assumes a local or distant spread.
What do we need to have ready before you can schedule our bulkhead repair or underwater inspection?
The contractor needs site access, a clear delineation of the work zone, and any required environmental or waterfront permits identified by the local authority. Scheduling depends on weather windows, tide or current conditions, and equipment availability. The contractor can't secure permits for you, but their dive supervisor will review the site and coordinate with you on any required notifications to the US Coast Guard or state agencies. Commercial diving operations follow OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart T, and the project must include a standby diver on site.
How is marine construction pricing structured? We're trying to compare bids for a new dock and associated pile work.
Commercial diving inspection work is usually quoted per structure or per substructure unit, while new marine construction is generally unit-priced – per linear foot for bulkhead or revetment, and per pile for a dock or pier. The crew/spread day rate covers the dive team and support equipment, and mobilisation is a separate charge to bring the spread to Bridgeport or CT. When comparing bids, look at the assumptions: water depth, number of piles, deck height, and the mobilisation distance matter more than the bottom-line number.
For a vessel hull inspection, is an in-water dive going to give us the same information as hauling the boat out?
An in-water hull exam, sometimes called an UWILD under Coast Guard regulations, can evaluate the hull's exterior, sea chests, and appendages, but it is not the same as a regulated dry-dock inspection. The Coast Guard requires an in-water survey to be performed by a dive team in accordance with 46 CFR 71.50-3, and it is often used to extend the interval between haul-outs. However, you still need to plan for periodic haul-out for line-shaft bearings, rudder pintles, and hull integrity readings that cannot be reliably done under water. Depending on your operating schedule, a diver can perform an initial bottom survey and thickness gauging without the cost of dry-docking, but the class and flag rules will dictate what is acceptable.
