Frequently Asked Questions — Elmhurst, NY
How is dredging work priced?
Most dredging is quoted as a crew/spread day rate plus a separate mobilisation charge. Inspections may be per structure, and marine construction is often unit-priced per linear foot or per pile. The mobilisation line usually explains the biggest difference between bids because it reflects distance, equipment, and logistics to Elmhurst, NY.
What permits and scheduling lead time should I expect?
The owner is typically responsible for federal, state, and local permits; the contractor needs a notice to proceed and a clear work window. Permits may impose seasonal restrictions (fish windows, protected species), so scheduling is often set three to six months ahead. In-water dredging minimizes the need for dewatering or haul-out, which can shorten the schedule.
What reporting and deliverables are standard after a dredge?
You should receive pre- and post-dredge hydrographic surveys, computed volumes, cross-sections, and a written narrative. Most companies deliver these as PDFs along with CAD/GIS files for your records. These documents verify paid quantities and support future maintenance permits.
Do boats need to be hauled out or the basin dewatered for dredging?
No - the vast majority of marina dredging is performed in-water from a barge or floating plant. Boats are typically moved temporarily out of the immediate work area, but the basin remains flooded. Haul-out or dewatering is only considered for very small, isolated areas and is much more costly.
