Frequently Asked Questions — San Diego, CA
Why is mobilisation a separate line item, and does the cost change if I'm outside the San Diego, CA area?
Commercial diving is bid as a crew/spread day rate plus a separate mobilisation charge. The mob line pays for moving the truck, compressor, barge, and personnel to your site and back, so a contractor from farther away can have a lower daily rate but a bigger mob. Always ask for that number itemised—it's the line that most often explains a big gap between two bids.
How does pricing work for inspection work versus marine construction work?
Inspection is commonly quoted per structure or per substructure unit, so a bridge pier or tank interior is the pricing unit. Marine construction is unit-priced—per linear foot of pipeline, per pile, or per weld—while the dive crew itself is charged as a daily spread rate. Mobilisation is added on top, and crew size plus included diver hours are the biggest levers in the number you see.
For vessel work, can you do the inspection in-water, or do I need a haul-out?
In-water hull exams under 46 CFR 71.50-3 are routine for many vessels, and they can save the cost of a dry-dock or slip haul if the class or underwriter accepts them. The trade-off is surface condition and cleaning: you won't get the same coating detail in water, and internal or through-hull work still needs the boat out of the water. We assess access, visibility, and the class requirements before recommending either route.
What certifications should the dive team hold, and what do I get in the final report?
The supervisor should be an ADCI-certified commercial diving supervisor, and all personnel operate under OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart T; recreational diver cards are not commercial qualifications. Depending on the asset, the report will follow an applicable standard—NBIS and FHWA-NHI team leaders for bridges, AWWA M42/C652 for tanks—and include narrative, photo/video documentation, and a signed condition assessment.
